Book Launch: A Conversation on the History of Leftist Studies in China and the U.S. with Shi Yongqin and Paul Le Blanc (Rescheduled)

《被歪曲的革命》的問世，象徵著國內托洛茨基翻譯及研究者施用勤對國際共產運動的深刻總結。施用勤於1949年出生，成長於社會主義中國的變遷之中，這段歷程映射出中國知識分子對主流意識形態的潛在不滿，驅使他投身於托洛茨基的翻譯與研究。在這次對談中，我們還邀請了歷史學家保羅·勒布朗，他於1947年出生，1965年加入了「新左派」團體——民主社會學生聯盟（Students for a Democratic Society, SDS），並積極參與反越戰及各類民權運動。兩位學者都在那個充滿變革的六十年代中度過。

然而，有趣的是，為何在中美兩個截然不同的社會背景下，他們卻不約而同地踏上了國際共產運動研究的旅程？中美社會的知識分子對唯物主義者應具備的美德又有何不同的見解呢？基於這些問題，藉著新書發佈的契機，我們邀請兩位學者進行中美對話，反思美、蘇、中三國在歷史、官僚及革命等複雜情境下，如何塑造了20世紀及其後的發展。

The publication of The Distorted Revolution symbolizes Shi Yongqin’s profound summary of the international communist movement, as he is a prominent translator and researcher of Trotskyism in China. Born in 1949 and having grown up amid the changes in socialist China, Shi’s experiences reflect the latent dissatisfaction of Chinese intellectuals with mainstream ideology, which drove him to engage in the translation and study of Trotsky’s works.

In this dialogue, we also invite historian Paul Le Blanc, who was born in 1947 and joined the “New Left" group—Students for a Democratic Society (SDS)—in 1965, actively participating in anti-Vietnam War and various civil rights movements. Both scholars spent their formative years during the transformative 1960s.

Interestingly, why did they both embark on the journey of studying the international communist movement despite the vastly different social contexts of China and the U.S.? What differing views do Chinese and American intellectuals hold regarding the virtues that materialists should possess? Based on these questions, we invite both scholars to engage in a Sino-American dialogue on the occasion of this new book launch, reflecting on how the complex historical, bureaucratic, and revolutionary contexts of the U.S., Soviet Union, and China have shaped developments in the 20th century and beyond.
